This is one of the best shows of '78, and a creative pinnacle for this band's lineup. Not much in late 78-early 79 matches the Jan-Feb peak, 6/4, July 78, or the October 78 winterland stuff. But this show is certainly on that level, and a must hear for anyone exploring 1978.

Keith is playing very confidently and with a lot of blues influence going on (its a chicago show). He sounds very alive and Jerry hits some great solos this night. This is in many ways the peak of this late Godchaux lineup's repertoire. The highlight is a very exciting jam surrounding Other One, with some brain melt stuff.

This has the hottest versions this lineup played of Stagger Lee and I Need A Miracle. There is also a wonderful Candyman, very well played. I think this version of Music Never Stopped is in contention for best ever, especially given Keith's input. It's All Over Now is given special attention from the band (again - its chicago) and this performance is top notch, equal to the Dick Picks 18 version from Feb.

Scarlet-Fire is kinda mellow compared to other 78 versions people know and love, but don't miss Keith's beautiful playing on this version.

Top Quality versions of: Stagger Lee, Candyman, It's All Over Now, The Music Never Stopped, I Need A Miracle, Other One, He's Gone, From The Heart Of Me

People disco dancing in the aisle during Sugar Magnolia.

After the show Phil said, "We'd like to thank the people in the front row for not moving a muscle all night. We sure hope you folks can get home by yourselves."

This show has one of the songs that always bring something to mind for me. The Dead sang a few songs (original and cover) about some extremely badass women. A few of the obvious ones:

Delia DeLyon from Stagger Lee - she found her lover's killer and seduced him, shot him in the balls and had him dragged to City Hall for hanging.

The unnamed woman who called herself Jackaroe - she dressed as a man to enlist and go off to war to find and save her man, which she did.

Delilah Jones from Brown Eyed Women - she raised 8 boys (only one turned bad) in a tumbled down shack where it snowed so hard the roof caved in in Bigfoot County during the Depression (1930 when the walls caved in).

Delilah (the original Delilah, from the Bible and the song Samson & Delilah) - well she stood up to the strongest man that ever lived on earth, that's enough right there.

Mama from Mama Tried - widowed, tried to be both father and mother, worked hours without rest. What happened wasn't her fault.

Any others? Well they did also tell us that the women are smarter than the men, And as a man, I agree 100%. Cheers to the women.
