Comments:

A wonderful show topping off a "magical" tour that included, among other gems, a Dark Star played earlier in the week on a Full moon Friday-the-13th. This was the first show I taped, and unfortunately I have managed to lose the 1st set. But, I do have a killer master of the 2nd set.

You can find the complete show at www.ptt.nycheads.com/gd/gd84-07-22/
What I appreciate is the old school Dancin' which opened set one (Not that I ever disliked their 70's disco version).

Yea, your right, the space Dew is fantastic! Two great shows! The FOBs that came out of here sound like soundboards...

The Olympic shows as the L.A. summer Olympics started soon after. And I agree with the above post that this was the best Ventura show. Drums-Space is wicked and "I just want to make love to you" which was the first of only 2 times played is a special treat.

Loser, Jerry freaks. It is the "it". He begins to growl the words as soon as cold coffee but the chords rip apart at the crescendo. Hells Angels group were hanging with him on stage right. Jerry in a thick plaid long sleeve red & black shirt that would look normal on John Fogerty. And this in the hot summer sun. Hmmm. Bob feedback, trippy. The tracks right behind the stage and the train going by while the band played.... My second of what became an annual trek to Ventura. Talking Heads were hugely influential at this time and how I thought they would have fit right in with this setting. Crazy wonderful.

Ventura County Fairgrounds was a dirt floor Rodeo Arena that got kind of dusty when people danced and twirled. Fortunately, the Beach and Pacific Ocean were right outside the gates.

Yes... this is my 4th comment on this show, but...

Here we are at my 9th show. This is the show that I credit as the best one that I attended. I’m super biased as I also got this tape within weeks of the show. It is for sure my most listened-to show. The old school Dancin’s were such great openers. This is the first of at least 2 that I saw. It brings tears of happiness to my eyes. Jerry barely hangs on to the lyrics of Bertha, but survives. A bit of a let-down from the Dancin’. The Brother Esau is so delicate. What a great song. This could be the greatest Loser ever. This listen did not change my opinion. Brent teases Make Love to You, but the band doesn’t bite. The Cassidy and Ramble are fantastic as well, I’m starting to believe this really is one of the best shows of the mid-80s. Garcia’s blasting the verse of Ramble caps it. Sets the crowd off! Rockin’ closers of Hell and Day Job kill it. Day Job as NOT an encore is pretty great. They ruined it by relegating it to an encore.

The first bomb of Samson continues to lead me to think that my feelings about this set are justified. Garcia’s backups are excellent. This is ridiculous. Is there a better Samson???? A lovely Ship of Fools follows, then Make Love to You follows. (The only song sung by 3 different members: Pig, Brent, Jerry) I’ve bashed this tune before, but maybe if they would’ve kept this around, it could have been brilliant… Like the transition to MSWS. WOWWEE! Best Women Are Smarter? Is there such a thing? My first Terrapin… The feedback! The Bombs! WTF!!! The descent into my favorite all-time Drums/Space…Fish Jam with the conch shell that almost worked. Deep into Space there’s this very brief Mutant Spanish Jam (8 bars), then the veil of darkness begins to lift and a rare (out of drums) and explosive Morning Dew ensues (also my first. The build-up in the outro is epic. Throwin’ Stones is next and it’s rock solid, and here comes one of the late-era’s great Not Fade Away!! The combo was on my mp3 playlist years ago when I was training for an ultra-marathon( as well as the Samson, Loser, and Terrapin). It’s funny that I saw Midnight Hour 5 times out of 17 times they did it… My 1st Brokedown was lovely.

Grade: A+ (Seriously… this is at least as good as any Dave’s Picks from the era)
